Antigone, Scenic Charge

I was the Scenic Charge for Youngstown State University’s production of Antigone (2023). While the set may seem very simplistic, this was a very big undertaking. Set design by Todd Dicken.

  • I began by base coating everything with a solid white, then I went in with a sponge to add the brown-grey layer. Then, I used a textured roller to add the watered down white.

  • I used a technique called a Dutchman to cover the seams throughout the set.

The Last Five Years, Scenic Charge

I was the Scenic Charge for YSU’s production of The Last Five Years (2023). Since the set was very minimalist, the bookshelf and dock were the only two things that needed to be painted. Scenic Design by Todd Dicken.

  • I color matched the bookshelf to match the chair legs that sat next to it on stage.

  • I painted the dock using a woodgrain technique and focused on making it look like it was old and had been sitting on a lake in Ohio for a very long time.

Scenic Painting & Techniques Class

This was a study on general scenic painting techniques such as cross hatching, stumbling, and stippling.

This was a study on natural stone and greenery. There was a big focus on texture and layering to create a 3D effect from the audience.

This was a study on the different ways to convey brick from solid brick to “essence” of brick. This was also used to play with the type of base coat as well as the adding texture to the top layer so it is not as flat.

This was a study on different way to convey wood, from the most abstract sense to painting actual wood planks.

This was a study on painting facades. There was a special focus on creating the illusion that it was actually carved out of stone and how to work with scale. I have included the reference photo I painted from.
